Don't Rest Your Head
A downloadable TTRPG aid
Evil Hat describes their weird fantasy TTRPG Don’t Rest Your Head as “a sleek, dangerous little game, where your players are all insomniac protagonists with superpowers, fighting — and using — exhaustion and madness to stay alive, and awake for just one more night.”
I love its distinctive dice mechanics but had a hard time remembering how they worked at the table, so I made a few play aids:
- A two-page rules summary sheet clarifying how the mechanics work, made succinct for use during play (which should also help learn the game)
- A character sheet with a couple of formatting tricks which clarify character mechanics, plus a second page with character creation instructions and inspiration
- A GM's reference for use in play with a list of major setting elements and characters, the Pain ratings, and a few atmospheric word lists to help make up stuff for the Mad City on the fly
These are not enough to get you playing on their own, so you will want the original DRYH rules. The PDF is a bargain. Consider also springing for Evil Hat's official Don’t Lose Your Mind supplement; one does not need it to play but it is bursting with great ideas for Madness Powers for this or many other games. I rarely recommend TTRPG fiction but the Don’t Read This Book anthology is a delight; the stories stand on their own and deliver some real texture for the game setting.
